Dr. Shad (Farshad Fani Marvasti, MD, MPH) is a Stanford-trained physician, medical educator, researcher, public speaker and author. He is proactively engaged in creating solutions to promote health and prevent the chronic diseases of our time.

His work has been featured on local and national media where he has been quoted or interviewed for his recognized expertise in Public Health, Prevention, Nutrition, Wellness Integrative Medicine, Diabetes and Cardiometabolic Diseases, and the use of Evidence-Based Supplements optimize heath and longevity.

As an emerging thought leader, he has published in the New England Journal of Medicine where he and his co-author make the case for redesigning medicine to create a prevention based health care system.

As a practicing physician, Dr. Shad advocates for the use of food as medicine and actively teaches his patients to buy and prepare healthy meals with food prescriptions as a standard part of treating their medical conditions.

As a physician executive, he is working to develop innovative models and systems of care to reduce costs and improve quality in our health system.

Acting to transform medical education, Dr. Shad is redesigning the 4-year medical school curriculum to include lifestyle medicine, nutrition and evidence based complementary therapies to prevent disease and maintain health throughout the lifespan.

Working to expand our knowledge, Dr. Shad has undertaken research, published articles and medical textbook chapters on disease prevention, nutrition and complementary and alternative medicine since 1997. He has written two book chapters on Integrative Preventive Medicine in the most recent book of the Weil Integrative Medicine Library.

​To expand access to healthy lifestyles and address the social determinants of health, Dr. Shad continues to care for underserved patients who do not have access to health insurance. As part of this effort, he has engaged his medical students, local chefs and community members to conduct group cooking classes where patients with pre-diabetes and diabetes learn how to use food as medicine to treat their condition and stay healthy.

Dr. Shad is currently working on his first full length book with Dr. Richard Carmona for the general public and regularly writes for DRWEIL.COM as a featured expert in the field of Integrative Medicine.

Credentials

Education and Experience

Dr. Shad is a distinguished graduate of Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University and has obtained both his Medical Doctorate and Masters of Public Health from the University of Arizona.

He completed his medical residency training at the Stanford University School of Medicine and subsequently served as a postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Stanford Prevention Research Center.

Dr. Shad currently serves as the Director of Public Health, Prevention and Health Promotion at the University of Arizona College of Medicine Phoenix and as a physician researcher for the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University.

Dr. Shad also continues to teach Stanford medical students where he has served as Adjunct Clinical Faculty since 2011. He also served as the inaugural Medical Director at One Medical Arizona, an innovative technology-enabled primary care model recognized by health care leadership awards, where he saw patients and served as Medical Director of Clinical Partnerships and Strategy.

Dr. Shad is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine. Dr. Shad recently completed the Integrative Medicine Fellowship with his long time mentor and advisor Dr. Andrew Weil at the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine.
